VMS File/Hyperlink Associations

Vessel Management System (SVE)

The File/Hyperlinks association functionality allows you to establish a relationship between computer file objects (word documents, Excel spreadsheets, graphics, Internet links, PDF documents, email addresses, etc.) relevant to your vessel, with data contained in VMS.

The VMS File/Hyperlink module can be docked next to a Windows Explorer window, and the only effort required to associate an object is to drag it's icon into the VMS module window. The file Path is added automatically, no matter the depth or location of the file. The actual object file is not stored in VMS, only it's location is memorized, so deleting an association does not delete the object. The Hyperlink module can be isolated on your desktop with a single click making the association process easy and quick. You may associate as many objects with a single data record as you like, either in a single association session or multiple sessions. Multiple network users may add associations, and those associations can be available to all users.

Any type of object is fair game for association providing your computer knows what to do with the object. For instance, the example shown associates a water pump picture file with a maintenance procedure. The file type illustrated is quite common and will open with a single click on virtually any Windows computer. However, if you were to associate a PDF file (Adobe Portable Document File) with this maintenance procedure you would need some Adobe software installed on your computer to simply click and view. This is a Windows requirement, the types of objects and their parent viewer programs configured in the user's computer. So you may associate crew pictures with their personnel profiles, electronic manuals with maintenance procedures. The possibilities are as endless as the hard drive space on your computer.

If you have network users you may choose to keep objects on the individual workstations or the "Data Server." Keeping documents on the Data Server will ensure that all users have access to the same information.
